Winston & Strawn Boosts Litigation Practice in Washington, D.C. with Addition of Chopin

Winston & Strawn hired Alexandra E. Chopin within its Washington, D.C. office as a partner in the litigation department.

Chopin specializes in high-value international commercial, tort and regulatory disputes and investigations in the U.S. on behalf of domestic and foreign financial institutions and central banking authorities, global corporations and foreign sovereign governments and sovereign-owned entities. An experienced trial lawyer and appellate advocate, Chopin is recognized for her success in securing early dismissals of litigation by challenging jurisdiction under the U.S. Constitution and federal statutes with extraterritorial effect, including the Antiterrorism Act and the Foreign Sovereign Immunities Act. She has litigated these issues before federal and state courts at all levels, including in the U.S. Supreme Court.

A former college newspaper reporter and media consultant to political campaigns, Chopin also regularly represents publications, broadcast media and public figures in defamation actions throughout the United States.

“Winston’s powerhouse litigators are playing a critical role in the most complex, cutting-edge cases in the courts today, and the firm is a natural fit for my clients,” Chopin said. “Winston innately understands that international clients need their Washington, D.C. lawyers to protect their ability to do business in the U.S. by recognizing the potential for federal statutes and regulations to trigger agency investigations and congressional scrutiny in addition to litigation.”

“Alexandra’s talent and skill for litigating high-value cases and investigations that span multiple U.S. and international jurisdictions make her an important strategic addition to our litigation team,” David Rogers, Washington, D.C. office managing partner for Winston & Strawn, said. “She will also be a tremendous asset to the D.C. office because, after nearly two decades in practice in Washington, she knows how to create solutions by looking beyond the courts to legislative, regulatory, political and media avenues unique to D.C.”

“Winston is committed to strategic growth in our nation’s capital, and Alexandra brings significant experience in large-scale litigation and complex case management,” Linda Coberly and Tom Melsheimer, litigation department co-chairs of Winston & Strawn, said. “We look forward to her insights and contributions as our litigation team continues to generate favorable results for our clients.”
