Tompkins Community Bank has named John Perate as Chief Lending Officer for its Pennsylvania market, succeeding Jim Whitton, who will retire in June after 12 years with the bank.

Perate brings nearly 30 years of experience in banking and finance, most recently serving at M&T Bank. In his new role, he will lead Tompkins’ commercial lending and business development efforts across central Pennsylvania and greater Philadelphia.

“John’s extensive industry experience and expansive network throughout the region makes him an ideal fit for this position,” Whitton said. “I am confident in his ability to step into my role upon my retirement and look forward to watching him steer Tompkins toward continued success.”

Perate will work closely with commercial regional executives Peter Rowley, Angelo Ramirez, and Harry Ciavarella, as well as with Travis Werley, who leads agricultural lending. His experience spans business banking, middle-market lending, risk management, and financial operations.

A graduate of Penn State University, Perate holds a certificate from the Pennsylvania Bankers Association’s School of Commercial Lending. He serves on several local boards, including the Greater Reading Chamber Alliance and the United Way of Berks County campaign cabinet.

“John is the right fit, not only because of his breadth of knowledge and leadership experience, but also for his community-first philosophy,” said Ginger Kunkel, president of Tompkins’ Pennsylvania market. “He is a well-respected community leader and I look forward to collaborating with him.”
