J. Emmett Murphy has rejoined King & Spalding as a partner in the business litigation practice group. He is based in the New York office.

Murphy’s practice focuses on professional liability litigation and regulatory matters, securities class actions and complex commercial disputes, with a particular focus on financial reporting and accounting matters. He is a seasoned litigator, having tried cases in federal and state courts and in both domestic and international arbitrations, and has argued appeals before both federal and state appellate courts. He rejoins the firm from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), where since 2023 he served as a senior trial attorney in the division of enforcement.

“Emmett’s background and experience positions him to contribute immediately to complex disputes and regulatory matters for a range of clients, particularly those in the financial services space, including accounting firms,” Damien Marshall, co-leader of the firm’s business litigation practice group, said. “Emmett is a well-respected and high-performing partner, and welcoming him back after his government service deepens our capabilities in regulatory investigations, client and shareholder claims, cross-border disputes and other high-stakes litigation.”

Prior to his government service, Murphy was an associate and then partner at King & Spalding from 2010 to 2023. Murphy received his J.D. from Fordham University and his B.A. from Binghamton University.

“Rejoining King & Spalding is returning to the place where I became the litigator I am today, and I look forward to teaming with my King & Spalding colleagues again and to get back to work representing clients in their complex litigation and regulatory matters,” Murphy said.
