Oaktree Asset-Backed Income Fund Launches for U.S. Individual Investors

The fund’s strategy is diversified across sectors, collateral types and investment formats, designed to help investors navigate through varying market cycles.

Brookfield’s private wealth platform has launched the Oaktree Asset-Backed Income Fund (OABIX), an evergreen interval fund intended to provide U.S. individual investors with access to Oaktree’s asset-backed finance (ABF) expertise. The fund’s strategy is diversified across sectors, collateral types and investment formats, designed to help investors navigate through varying market cycles. OABIX launched with $400 million in committed capital, expanding Brookfield and Oaktree’s suite of evergreen solutions for the private wealth community, which now includes six vehicles across credit, real estate, infrastructure and renewables and private equity.

OABIX seeks to generate attractive income and strong risk-adjusted returns by constructing a diversified portfolio of credit investments, each secured by cash-flowing assets. The strategy benefits from Oaktree’s three decades of specialized credit expertise, including more than two decades of experience investing in private ABF and traded structured credit. The fund is intended to provide private wealth investors with exposure to an asset class that has traditionally only been available to institutional investors, and offers lower minimums, monthly subscriptions, annual 1099 tax reporting and a simplified interval fund structure.

“Asset-backed finance is one of the most compelling opportunities in private credit today. These essential assets keep our lives — and the global economy — moving,” Armen Panossian, co-CEO and head of performing credit of Oaktree, said. “With ongoing demand for capital and banks continuing to reduce lending, the ABF opportunity set is continuing to expand. OABIX is designed to allow individual investors to participate in this growth with the benefit of Oaktree’s deep expertise, underwriting discipline and global sourcing capabilities developed over decades.”

John Sweeney, CEO of Brookfield’s private wealth group, said, “Private wealth investors want durable income and diversification, and OABIX is positioned to address both. We’re grateful to the RIAs who partnered with us to bring the strategy to market, and their engagement reflects the market’s demand for credit solutions. Together with our existing interval fund and BDC, OABIX broadens the range of income-oriented strategies available through the combined strength of Oaktree and Brookfield.”
