Alvarez & Marsal (A&M), a global professional services firm, appointed Joseph C. Sponholz, Esq. as managing director and leader of its new North American transport and logistics infrastructure group within its INFRA team in the United States.

“Our global INFRA practice has experienced rapid growth since its inception,” Marcos Ganut, managing director leading A&M INFRA’s global expansion, said. “The launch of Transportation and Logistics Infrastructure in North America marks the next milestone of our increasing geographic footprint in support of growing market demand amidst economic volatility. Adding Joe allows us to provide clients with a more comprehensive suite of offerings and a specialized focus on transport and logistics infrastructure matters.”

Sponholz brings 28 years of experience in law, finance, operations and management consulting to his role at A&M. He advises senior government and private sector decision-makers on complex problems in the planning and execution of major capital projects. He mitigates issues such as procurement challenges and construction productivity, and ensures the required guidance and support needed to meet critical deadlines.

Known as an “infrastructure problem-solver,” Sponholz has worked on significant engagements across multiple government departments and private sector initiatives, including airports, highways, bridges and tunnels, freight and passenger rail, oil and gas facilities and ports.

“We are committed to extending our presence into the markets with key growth opportunities, where government agencies and organizations are facing influxes of activity and will benefit from our teams’ unique expertise,” Luis de Lucio, managing director and head of growth markets for A&M, said. “With Joe leading our U.S. expansion in transport and logistics infrastructure, A&M is poised to be a true asset to organizations executing on large capital projects in a complex environment.”

Before joining A&M, Sponholz spent six years with LEK Consulting, where he most recently served as partner, managing director and global head of the major capital projects practice. During this time, Sponholz spearheaded performance improvement, business and operating model transformation initiatives, and served as a member of the commercial committee tasked with reviewing, executing decisions and managing all commercial matters for Australian offices of global partnership.

“The significant transportation and logistics infrastructure projects in North America require fully integrated advisory services that can help manage a host of nuanced issues from start to finish,” Sponholz said. “Combining my in-depth experience with Alvarez & Marsal’s global footprint, integrated platform and operational heritage ensures clients have the senior, experienced, hands-on support to execute increasingly complex transportation and logistics projects that are now the norm.”

Sponholz earned a Juris Doctor from Fordham University School of Law and a bachelor of arts in politics and economics from New York University. A member of the New York State Bar, Sponholz has also completed executive education at Columbia University, Wharton School of Business, Thunderbird School of Global Mgmt., and the Institute for Supply Chain Management.
