Global professional services firm Alvarez & Marsal (A&M) appointed Brett Kumm as a managing director in the investigations and compliance practice of the disputes and investigations division, based in San Francisco.

Kumm brings more than 25 years of experience in complex internal investigations, forensic accounting and white-collar crime matters. His track record includes advising boards, audit committees and senior management teams – including multiple Fortune 100 companies – on high-stakes matters involving the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and the Department of Justice (DOJ). He has presented investigative findings to multiple SEC and DOJ offices, evaluated whistleblower allegations and resolved financial reporting disputes tied to mergers and acquisitions, contractual matters and alleged Ponzi schemes.

“Brett’s proven track record in handling complex, high-profile investigations across industries strengthens our ability to deliver impactful, results-driven solutions for our clients,” Jerry Dent, managing director and global practice leader of A&M’s disputes and investigations division, said. “His experience aligns perfectly with our growth strategy for the investigations and compliance practice, particularly as regulatory scrutiny continues to intensify.”

“A&M regularly appears before DOJ, SEC and other regulators,” Steve Spiegelhalter, managing director and leader of A&M’s investigations and compliance practice, said. “Brett brings years of the same experience in high-stakes settings and will expand our ability to help clients address sensitive issues quickly and effectively. His appointment supports the rapid growth of our investigations and compliance capabilities globally.”

Prior to joining A&M, Kumm was a senior managing director at FTI Consulting’s forensic and litigation practice and previously spent nearly two decades at Arthur Andersen and KPMG. He holds bachelor’s degrees in accounting and finance from the University of Oregon.
