Colbeck Capital Management, a middle-market private credit firm focused on strategic lending, added Michael Smith as a managing director on the investment team. Based in New York, he will report to Colbeck’s co-founders and managing partners, Jason Beckman and Jason Colodne.

Smith adds nearly two decades of private credit and corporate lending experience across sponsored, non-sponsored and special situations investment strategies to Colbeck’s existing bench of investment talent. Most recently, Smith served as co-head of the U.S. private debt strategy at global asset manager Muzinich, where he scaled the platform to more than $500 million and oversaw all aspects of capital formation, origination, investment execution, portfolio and team management.

“We are pleased to welcome Michael to Colbeck as we continue to scale our investment team with best-in-class executives and broaden our capabilities across the U.S. middle market,” Colodne and Beckman jointly said. “Against the backdrop of a dynamic and ever-evolving credit environment, Michael’s extensive experience growing private debt platforms, coupled with his proven ability to originate, structure and manage complex investments, will be instrumental as we look to continue capturing attractive opportunities that can deliver value to our borrowers and investors.”

Smith added, “Colbeck has distinguished itself as a leading provider of innovative capital solutions for middle-market companies, operating with a level of creativity and flexibility that sets it apart from traditional lenders. I am thrilled to join the firm at a time when market dislocations are creating compelling investment opportunities for disciplined, well-capitalized firms like Colbeck. I look forward to contributing to the continued growth of the platform.”

Earlier in his career, Smith held senior investment roles at Credit Suisse, GE Antares Capital (now Antares Capital) and Madison Capital Funding (now Apogem Capital), where he executed a broad range of private credit transactions across sponsored finance, non-sponsored lending and special situations. He began his career in investment banking and corporate credit at BMO Capital Markets.

Smith holds a bachelor of arts in chemistry from Boston University.
