Alvarez & Marsal Tax, an affiliate of global professional services firm Alvarez & Marsal (A&M), launched its Indonesia tax practice. The new practice will be led by Jaap Zwaan, who joins as managing director with over 27 years of international tax experience, specializing in mergers and acquisitions (M&A), tax structuring and tax controversy.

The Indonesia tax practice will focus on delivering strategic tax advisory services across a wide range of sectors including infrastructure, renewables, fintech, healthcare, life sciences, logistics, manufacturing, real estate and telecommunications. The team will support clients with optimizing cross-border tax efficiency, ensuring compliance with OECD-aligned documentation requirements and leveraging Indonesia’s extensive network of double tax avoidance agreements (DTAs).

“Jaap’s extensive experience and deep knowledge of international tax and M&A tax will be instrumental in providing our clients with exceptional service and strategic advice in the Indonesian market,” James Badenach, managing director and head of A&M Tax APAC (excluding Australia), said. “He and the team will provide end-to-end support on deal structuring, buy- and sell-side tax due diligence and post-deal integration, as well as tax audits and disputes assistance.”

Indonesia’s evolving regulatory landscape and strategic economic initiatives have made it a prime destination for foreign direct investment (FDI). The country offers a range of tax incentives, including tax holidays, allowances, and exemptions for investments in priority sectors and special economic zones. With the implementation of Global Minimum Tax (GMT) rules in 2025, the tax environment is undergoing significant transformation, requiring investors to adapt to new compliance standards.

“From the complexity and intricacies of tax reform to significant trade issues, a resilient M&A market and digital economy taxation, we are poised to help,” Ernesto “Ernie” Perez, managing director and global head of A&M Tax, said. “The broadening of our APAC footprint with the addition of an Indonesia practice furthers our commitment to serve the region and offer our clients worldwide premier advisory on a truly global platform. Jaap’s credentials and proven track record as an advisor and leader bolster our extensive global transaction tax capabilities. He and his team will be invaluable.”

Zwaan’s recent work includes advising an investor consortium on the setup of a USD 2.75 billion toll road investment platform in Indonesia, as well as supporting sovereign wealth funds and private equity firms on transactions across the region. Prior to joining A&M Tax, he led the international tax and M&A tax practice at KPMG Indonesia and held senior roles at Loyens & Loeff in Amsterdam, Geneva and Zurich.
