TMA Honors Four Pros with Individual Awards

The Turnaround Management Association selected four members to be recognized as outstanding individuals at the organization’s annual meeting in September. TMA will honor Alexander J. Boerema of Aurora Management Partners and Zachary P. Hyman of Berger Singerman as the recipients of the TMA Emerging Leader Award; Bernadette M. Barron, CTP of Barron Business Consulting, as the recipient of the Outstanding Individual Contribution Award and Janine Figueiredo of Hahn & Hessen as the recipient of the Chapter Impact Award.

“It is my pleasure to celebrate these outstanding turnaround professionals who are leading so many initiatives and making a difference for the restructuring industry,” said Jonathan Reimche, TMA Global awards committee chairman and partner at PwC. “These four members have worked tirelessly to make a significant contribution to our organization and completely deserve this special recognition.”

Boerema became actively involved in the TMA Chicago/Midwest chapter in 2014. Since then, he has held several leadership positions and currently holds the positions of treasurer for the Chicago/Midwest chapter and chair for TMA Global NextGen. He has been instrumental in growing the TMA Global NextGen Leadership Meeting, which becomes the TMA NextGen Leadership Conference this year, opening registration to all who are interested in attending. Most recently, Boerema presented a report on attendance analysis research before the TMA board of trustees. He conducted this research for the Chicago/Midwest chapter with the goal of it becoming a potential analytical tool that other chapters can use in making data-driven decisions for future growth of programs and membership engagement. Boerema is an experienced turnaround and restructuring professional with more than 10 years of experience working with financially distressed and under-performing companies.

Hyman took on his first leadership role in the TMA Florida chapter in 2014 as chair of the chapter’s NextGen committee. He now serves as the president of the Florida Chapter, a role he has held since 2016. Hyman restructured the chapter by developing a vision, decreasing expenses, hiring a new administrator, and reconstituting the board of directors. Because of his vision and dedication, the chapter has experienced significant growth. As an attorney, Hyman practices in the areas of complex commercial litigation and intellectual property.

Barron joined the TMA Chicago/Midwest Chapter in 2003. She has been actively involved in the Chicago chapter, including work with their community outreach and pro bono committees. Barron also played an important role in revamping the Certified Turnaround Professional process and was an integral figure in the development of test materials and study guides. Most recently, she led her chapter’s scholarship foundation and has had the honor of awarding scholarships to need-based students and children or relatives of TMA members. Barron is an experienced turnaround consultant, receiver, assignee for the benefit of creditors, and liquidating trustee, primarily for family-owned and entrepreneurial businesses.

Figueiredo has served in various leadership roles at the TMA New York City chapter since 2010. Her early work focused on improving the chapter’s programming and membership initiatives. In 2014, Figueiredo was appointed as the chapter’s general counsel and began leading the governance committee to redefine the chapter’s governance structure and policies. Her efforts were touted as bringing the chapter into the 21st century and helping it develop into a more professional organization. As an attorney, Figueiredo’s practice focuses primarily on the representation of creditors’ committees, liquidating trustees and secured and unsecured creditors in complex corporate reorganizations, restructurings and liquidations.
