Jeff Ryan approaches credit with a strong focus on detailed and disciplined analysis. As principal of underwriting and portfolio management at Callodine Credit Management (CCM), Ryan is known for digging deeply into businesses’ inner workings to understand their performance and risks. Initially drawn to the intellectual challenge of navigating incomplete information in uncertain environments, Ryan’s decade in the industry has only increased his appreciation for granular analysis. “Every detail matters,” Ryan notes. “The insights you uncover during underwriting dictate your position, protections and collateral coverage for the life of the transaction.”
This past year, Ryan demonstrated his sharp execution by spearheading an $82.5 million term loan facility to a specialty aviation company. The transaction was particularly complex, involving seasonal cash flows, low liquidity and a challenging collateral composition. Rather than abandoning the opportunity, Ryan worked closely with the company and its sponsor to craft a bespoke solution. By designing a structure that provided a turnaround pathway for the company, while maintaining rigorous protections for CCM, Ryan proved that creative problem-solving is the ultimate differentiator in high-stakes lending. For Ryan, the deal reinforced the value of “staying in the weeds” to find a path forward.
Ryan attributes much of his development to the mentorship of David Vega, CCM’s head of credit and the person most responsible for honing Ryan’s commitment to exhaustive due diligence. “I wouldn’t be where I am without a mentor and friend who pushed me to take on new responsibilities while emphasizing that no detail should be overlooked,” Ryan says. “It’s Vega’s steady encouragement and support that allows me to continue to step outside of my comfort zone and develop professionally.” By combining this technical rigor with a genuine passion for discovery, Ryan is establishing himself as a foundational force in the next wave of specialty finance leadership.
