Over the course of his career, Gilbert Liu has developed a reputation as the go-to person for unique, complex and first-of-their-kind transactions.

This was particularly evident during the high-pressure environment of the 2008 financial crisis. Liu recalls a landmark deal for the nation’s largest provider of bulk CO₂ equipment as a defining moment. It was a whole-business securitization structured around more than 100,000 individual contracts. “Coordinating multiple stakeholders, navigating novel collateral and closing under the intense time pressure of the financial crisis made this one of the most challenging yet rewarding deals of my career,” Liu says.

Liu’s approach to relationships — both personal and professional — is deeply influenced by his martial arts training, particularly the principles Renma and Zenshin.

Renma is about constant refinement and improvement. For Liu, that defines how he builds relationships: staying engaged, learning how people work and think, and investing in the relationship long after a deal closes.

Zenshin is about moving forward with intention and integrity, and it guides how he shows up for clients day after day: present, honest and fully in it with them.

Those principles shape Liu’s belief that the strongest relationships aren’t transactional— they’re personal. They’re built by working through problems together as partners and being there even when there isn’t a deal on the table. Instead of standing back and pointing out issues, Liu prefers to work alongside clients, roll up his sleeves and figure things out. Over time, that shared problem solving naturally turns into trust. Clients come to see him not just as someone they work with on transactions, but as a sounding board — someone they trust for perspective on business decisions and, at times, life more broadly. That kind of relationship keeps conversations open, builds real confidence and holds steady when deals get complicated and markets move fast.
