Tony Pena
ABL Originator
Truist

Through effective origination and a clear vision for the future of specialty finance, Tony Pena has become a trusted contributor to both the Truist team and the broader sector. Since beginning his career in asset-based lending, Pena has worked with clients on underwritten acquisition financings, dividend recapitalizations and general corporate refinancings, among other types of transactions, across both the middle market and the large corporate, broadly syndicated ABL space.

These experiences positioned Pena for the ABL Originations role that he has grown into at Truist. He plays a pivotal role in the cross-team collaboration required to originate and execute on bilateral, clubbed and broadly syndicated ABL facilities. Beyond transactions, Pena has contributed to the development of white papers designed to deepen expertise in non-traditional ABL sectors that could serve as opportunities for growth.

Pena believes that growth and innovation within the industry will come from the evolving mix of perspectives across the industry’s talent base, particularly as the next generation of leaders steps into more senior roles. Pena also anticipates changes in the industry driven by artificial intelligence. Whether applied to prospecting and early risk identification or to the monitoring of existing portfolios, he is adamant that AI will enable firms to react quicker and more efficiently.

Pena’s expertise has been shaped by mentors who emphasized the value of professional integrity. “One of the most important lessons they taught me is the value of establishing and preserving your reputation,” Pena says. “That starts with truly owning your work product— whether it’s an analysis, a deliverable or a proposal — and ensuring it reflects the level of rigor, accuracy and thoughtfulness you want to be known for.”

By combining this commitment to quality with a focus on emerging technology, Pena continues to set a high standard for excellence in origination.
