From handling landmark deals under immense pressure to understanding clients at their core, Jay Fabian is a vital asset to MRC and a potent role model for resilient young professionals. Since beginning his storied career in asset-based lending, Fabian has prioritized one specific skill in his repertoire above almost all else: his personable nature and innate affinity for others. He believes getting to know clients on a fundamental, human level can unlock unique insights into their underlying priorities, long-term goals and professional vision.
“For me, the true long-term clients are the referral-source relationships I’ve cultivated over the last decade-plus,” says Fabian. “I think finding ways to connect outside of the normal course of business — whether it be over a meal, a social activity or anything else that provides for one-on-one engagement — is key. It allows for a mutual trust and a deeper insight into one’s character to be cultivated.” This ability to meaningfully connect and interface with clients has carried Fabian through some of the most defining moments of his tenure at MRC. His very first deal at the firm involved a complex Chapter 11 exit financing, a high-stakes process that inherently requires the borrower to place substantial trust in the lender’s reliability. Thanks to that established trust and the borrower’s subsequent transparency, Fabian was able to navigate the intricate details of the deal and see it through to a successful close.
This experience helped shape Fabian’s broader outlook on relationship management: identifying the motivations behind a client’s decisions and consistently communicating shared priorities leads to the best possible outcomes. While this approach may require walking away from a potential deal or two in the short term, it ultimately yields significant dividends. In his eyes, trust has no peer and must be prioritized for both lenders and borrowers to prosper.
