Squire Patton Boggs has appointed William Liu as a partner in London, joining the firm’s global financial services practice group from K&L Gates.
Liu’s appointment follows on from the recent hire of his former colleague Heather E. Rees, also partner in the financial services practice, and further strengthens the firm’s rapidly growing global structured finance team led by Ranajoy Basu, who joined the firm last year.
Jim Barresi, global head of the firm’s financial services practice group, said, “William is a highly regarded finance lawyer with extensive trans-Atlantic and global experience across capital markets, and in specialist loan financings and restructurings. He is another important addition to our growing global team.”
Basu added, “We are absolutely delighted to welcome William to the team. His in-depth experience advising on cross-border financing transactions, involving indenture trustees, facility agents and security agents, is another area of expertise that distinguishes our group in the arena of global finance. The arrival of William further strengthens our position as a leading finance practice, which includes the strongest trans-Atlantic corporate trust team for high yield, leveraged finance, liability management and restructurings.”
Liu represents corporate trustees, facility and collateral agents in the U.S. and UK on a wide range of cross-border financing transactions, including complex loan financings and restructurings. He has extensive experience dealing with highly leveraged and structured transactions and regularly advises clients on distressed financings, workouts and insolvency-related matters. He has acted in a number of award-winning capital markets transactions including the IFLR Europe Awards ‘High Yield Bond Deal of the Year’ in 2016, 2018, 2019 and 2020.
Liu is admitted to practice in New York and is a registered foreign lawyer in England and Wales. He is a graduate of the University of California, Berkeley, and holds a J.D. from University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) School of Law, 2007.
“Squire Patton Boggs has one of the fastest-growing financial services practices among global law firms,” Liu said. “Its reputation, international presence and resolute leadership make it a dynamic environment in which to work. I look forward to bringing new solutions to clients alongside my many new colleagues around the globe.”
