Eversheds Sutherland Welcomes Back Kiessig as Partner in the Tax Practice Group

Taylor Kiessig has rejoined Eversheds Sutherland as a partner in the tax practice group, further strengthening the firm’s federal and international tax capabilities.

Kiessig returns to Eversheds Sutherland after serving as special counsel in the IRS Office of Chief Counsel (international), where he played a significant role in drafting guidance addressing U.S. international tax matters and supported major international tax initiatives.

“We are thrilled to welcome Taylor back to Eversheds Sutherland,” Lino Mendiola, global co-CEO and U.S. chief executive at Eversheds, said. “His government experience, deep technical strengths and strong reputation with clients make him an exceptional addition to our global tax team. Taylor’s return reflects the confidence we have in his ability to quickly re-engage with the market, leveraging both his prior experience at the firm and the significant knowledge he gained from his time at the IRS. His insight will further strengthen our federal and international tax capabilities and support clients navigating increasingly complex cross-border challenges.”

Kiessig originally joined Eversheds Sutherland in 2014 and was promoted to partner in 2018. Before joining the IRS, he served as a trusted advisor to U.S. and non-U.S. multinational companies, focusing on federal and international tax planning, the taxation of financial products and the structuring and negotiation of domestic and cross border transactions, including mergers, acquisitions, joint ventures and restructurings.

Building on his experience, Kiessig will counsel companies across a wide range of industries such as technology, manufacturing, financial services, life sciences, energy and consumer products. Kiessig will help clients navigate complex cross border tax issues, assess the implications of evolving international tax rules and assist clients with tax considerations related to global operating structures. He will advise businesses preparing for heightened regulatory and audit scrutiny, drawing on his first hand insight into how guidance is developed and applied within the government.

“Taylor’s return is a valuable addition to our team,” Robert Chase, tax practice group leader (U.S.) for Eversheds, said. “His background in both private practice and government gives him a practical understanding of the issues companies are prioritizing right now, from cross border planning to evolving regulatory requirements. Taylor will play an important role in supporting ongoing client matters and helping us expand the depth of our service across the federal and international tax landscape. We’re looking forward to the perspective and problem solving approach he brings back to the practice.”

During his tenure with the IRS, Kiessig was part of teams honored with the IRS Chief Counsel National Award for Outstanding Published/Technical Guidance and the 2024 Treasury Legal Team of the Year, reflecting his substantial contributions to international tax policy and regulatory development. He also served as a frequent and prolific speaker on complex federal and international tax topics, enhancing his visibility and relationships across the tax community.

Prior to his original tenure at Eversheds Sutherland, Kiessig practiced in the Washington, D.C. office of Fried Frank. He was previously recognized by The Legal 500 United States for his work in U.S. taxes: non-contentious.
