Brian Dowd

Vice President
Tradewind Finance
By Erin Rafter

As a finance major focused on quantitative modeling and statistics, Brian Dowd initially aimed to become a financial analyst. But an internship at an international commercial finance firm exposed him to broader aspects of business. Rotating through departments, he found his niche in sales and business development.

Now senior vice president at Tradewind Finance, Dowd draws on over a decade of experience financing companies involved in global trade. He leads a team that sources and structures deals across the U.S., Mexico, Central America and South America.

In 2024, Dowd helped lead Tradewind’s expansion into Mexico and South America — two key regions amid shifting global supply chains. He oversaw more than $50 million in committed facilities, generating over $250 million in annual factored volume. Notable deals include a $15 million facility for a Caribbean fuel distributor and a $17 million deal for a sporting goods company — Tradewind’s largest Amazon vendor client. He also structured PO finance and factoring to support a premium Icelandic water brand’s international growth.

As fintech reshapes the industry, Dowd emphasizes the importance of balancing technology with human connection. “Clients still value personal interaction,” he says. “Adapting to AI is critical, but relationships remain key.” He views AI as the next leap in efficiency. “Blockchain started the digital trend, but AI can accelerate it.” To stay sharp, he reads industry news, watches Mad Money and Squawk Box and connects with peers.

For aspiring leaders, Dowd offers three key lessons. First, confidence matters — trust yourself and your team. “There’s no room for doubt when deadlines are tight.” Second, time management is essential to balance leadership responsibilities. Third, communication drives performance — clear expectations and constructive feedback help teams execute effectively.

Looking ahead, Dowd plans to grow Tradewind’s Americas team and expand into new markets across the region.
