So Joins Hogan Lovells as Head of Derivatives – Americas

The experienced attorney brings over 20 years of combined law firm and in-house experience to bolster the firm's derivatives capabilities in New York.

New York, 19 May – Hogan Lovells announced today that Edward So has joined the firm’s Corporate & Finance practice as a partner in the New York office and Head of Derivatives – Americas. Joining from White & Case, So focuses on derivatives transactions over a wide spectrum of asset classes, including cash and synthetic fixed income, rates, equity, credit, commodity, and FX products.

James Doyle, Head of the Corporate & Finance practice at Hogan Lovells, said: “We are delighted that Ed has agreed to join Hogan Lovells. In addition to enhancing further our ability to support our corporate and financial institution clients with U.S. derivatives advice, Ed’s strong reputation also boosts Hogan Lovells’ active global derivatives and structured products practice.”

John B. Beckman, Head of Capital Markets, Americas, said: “Ed is a highly skilled derivatives lawyer and his arrival enables us to support clients in an increasingly regulated area, where his knowledge will be invaluable to help our clients navigate complex oversight by different agencies in the U.S.”

“We are excited to have Ed join our team in New York,” added Michael Kuh, Office Managing Partner, New York. “He has built an excellent reputation with over 20 years of combined law firm and in-house experience, and he will play an important role as we continue to grow in New York.”

So has broad experience in structuring, negotiation, and documentation of derivatives in connection with financing, capital raising, investment, and agency trading. He also frequently advises clients on futures, OTC clearing, and prime brokerage documentation, as well as related netting, margin, and other regulatory issues.

His practice includes interpretation and implementation of the Dodd-Frank Act and related regulations affecting broker dealers, futures commission merchants, investment funds, end-users, and other participants in the securities, futures, and swaps markets. His experience extends to assisting clients in the derivatives aspects of financing, dispute resolution, and mergers and acquisitions.

So has served as the Secretary of the New York City Bar Association Futures & Derivatives Committee since 2021 and as Co-Chair of the New York City Bar Association Digital Technologies Task Force since 2022.

His arrival at Hogan Lovells closely follows the addition of Natalie Edwards as Head of New York Financial Institutions M&A.
