Brian Gleason
Senior Managing Director
J.S. Held

Since launching his career in 1996, Brian Gleason has been a steadying force in the specialty finance sector, guiding clients through complex capital challenges. Motivated by a commitment to responsible lending and the preservation of livelihoods, he provides lenders with vital guidance on navigating structural vulnerabilities particularly in distressed credit. Gleason has witnessed the dramatic expansion of the middle-market credit space and maintains that the most valuable advisors are those who bring seasoned judgment and adaptability to bear when circumstances are uncertain.

In Gleason’s early career, the credit environment was significantly more concentrated. Most companies borrowed exclusively from banks, or a small group of specialized non-bank lenders, and workout settlements followed a widely understood, consistent process. While the industry has expanded, introducing more participants and increasingly complex structures, Gleason observes that this growth has led to greater dispersion in experience. He believes that while tools may change, the core standards of excellence and the need for hands-on problem-solving remain constant.

According to Gleason, when lenders face dire circumstances like credit workouts, leaders must prioritize three things: jobs, companies and capital. Having worked with organizations at their most vulnerable, when liquidity has evaporated and payroll was at risk, he views his work as a discipline focused on constructive exits. Consequently, his primary concern for the industry is not automation but the declining quality of the true workout experience among professionals tasked with resolving complex, distressed situations.

Regarding advice for the next generation, Gleason believes experience is the most valuable currency and that deep learning and exposure to difficult situations compound over time in ways money cannot.

“If I could reinforce one lesson to my younger self, it would be to stay focused on mastering the craft,” Gleason says. “Find the area where you can excel, work hard, stay curious and commit to doing it exceptionally well for the long run.”
