For Beth Izzo, a career in specialty finance began with curiosity and evolved into a deep understanding of its strategic impact. Now managing director of Asset-Based Lending and Metals Portfolio Team Lead at BMO Bank, Izzo first joined the firm through its Commercial Analyst Development Program. Initially knowing little about commercial banking, she sought a path that blended analytical rigor with client engagement. Early roles in middle-market cash-flow lending and special assets helped shape her perspective, but it was in ABL that she found her stride, recognizing it as a critical working-capital solution and a powerful driver of growth.
Over the past year, Izzo has stepped into a broader leadership role, taking responsibility for overseeing BMO’s metals portfolio after years as a portfolio manager within the group. The vertical’s rapid expansion during her seven years in ABL has been a defining part of her career, and she has immersed herself deeply in the industry — contributing thought leadership, participating in committees and advocating for her clients. Simultaneously, she has expanded her internal influence by playing a key role in BMO’s training program and helping shape the next generation of talent through mentorship and recruitment.
Izzo credits much of her growth to the guidance of mentors who encouraged her to think differently about career progression. Rather than chasing titles, she has embraced a “zig-zag” approach, prioritizing opportunities that build new skills and broaden her perspective.
“A lateral move isn’t any less of an opportunity. By zig-zagging your way through various opportunities, you can build out the best version of yourself to be equipped for that ultimate career goal,” Izzo says.
That mindset, paired with a willingness to lean into uncertainty, has become central to her leadership style. She views fear not as a barrier, but as a signal of growth and ambition.
