King & Spalding added Maureen Sweeney as a partner in its finance and restructuring practice group in Chicago. Sweeney is the former senior vice president and general counsel of private investment firm PSP Partners.
Sweeney has more than 25 years of experience handling a wide range of finance, restructuring and other transactional work for private equity firms and public and private companies across numerous business sectors and across borders, both in house at PSP Partners and in private practice. Her experience spans all types of financing, including in the context of acquisitions, restructurings, initial public offerings and other significant transactions.
“Maureen’s range of experience across private credit, corporate finance and financial restructuring and her perspectives from both private practice and in-house will benefit our clients and our team,” Carolyn Alford, co-leader of the firm’s finance and restructuring practice group, said. “Maureen is well-known to many of our partners and has a strong reputation as a talented and collaborative lawyer and valued mentor – key qualities that ensure she will be a strong fit for our practice and an important contributor to our continuing growth.”
In her role as vice president and general counsel of PSP Partners, Sweeney was responsible for developing legal risk strategy, leading the legal aspects of all investments and other transactions, and advising on corporate and organizational governance, risk management, compliance, human resources and disputes. Prior to her time at PSP Partners, Sweeney was a finance partner at Kirkland & Ellis, where she practiced for nearly 20 years, and at Paul Hastings. She earned her undergraduate degree from University of Michigan and her law degree, cum laude, from University of Michigan Law School.
“I have worked alongside and across from many of my new King & Spalding partners over the course of my career, and I’m excited to now combine forces with them to help grow the firm’s finance and restructuring work in Chicago and across the country,” Sweeney said. “I really enjoy being at the front lines of practicing law and rolling up my sleeves to execute complex transactions for clients, and King & Spalding – with its growing finance and restructuring practice and strong focus on collaboration – is the right place for me to do it.”
