“I’ve come to appreciate how profoundly important an organization’s culture and values are to long-term success and career satisfaction. Technical skills matter, but thriving professionally requires working alongside people you respect in an environment that reflects your values and integrity.”
Laurie A. Martin Montplaisir’s career in specialty finance reflects a rare blend of transactional skill, courtroom-tested judgment and commitment to service. Her path began as a first-year associate, when an assignment on an asset-based lending transaction sparked a lasting interest in the creativity of structured finance. Today, as a partner at Krieg DeVault LLP with more than 25 years of experience, Montplaisir represents banks, factoring companies and specialty lenders in complex transactional, regulatory and credit enforcement matters.
Montplaisir brings a distinctive dual perspective as a transactional lawyer informed by meaningful litigation experience. Early in her career, she practiced as a litigator and served as trial counsel in a commercial jury trial. That background continues to shape her drafting and negotiation strategy, leading her to draft financing agreements with a practical focus on how they may be interpreted by a court in the event of a dispute. By combining transactional precision with litigation-informed judgment, she helps clients advance their long-term business objectives while anticipating and reducing risk.
Beyond her legal practice, Montplaisir’s perspective is grounded in community and service. Her pro bono work has included helping protect a vulnerable family from displacement and assisting small business owners facing the unprecedented economic challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. She is active in her local sailing community, where she serves on the race committee and as a board member of a sailing school. At Krieg DeVault, she values an environment that reflects her commitment to integrity and collaboration. As technology and artificial intelligence continue to reshape the legal landscape, Montplaisir remains focused on learning about and applying AI in ways that enhance client service.
