David Grende has witnessed the evolution of asset-based lending from a niche offshoot of factoring into a sophisticated, mainstream financial product. As CEO and founder of Siena Lending Group, Grende’s career spans an era where finance companies shifted from small bank subsidiaries to expansive divisions offering intellectual property lending, enterprise value tranches and unitranche structures. “Today, banks have ABL as a product offering and non-banks have widened the scope to include stretch structures and more,” Grende notes. This expansion of product depth and market participation has been a defining theme of his decades in the industry.
Grende’s most enduring contribution to the specialty finance foundation is his transformative leadership within the Secured Finance Network (SFNet). Serving on the executive and management committees for nearly eight years, including a term as president, he was a primary driver in modernizing the association. He focused intensely on improving the quality of data produced by the organization, which has since become a benchmark for the industry. Furthermore, he was instrumental in recruiting key leadership that has moved the association forward. “If you are deeply involved, you can effectuate change,” Grende says, reflecting on his passion for elevating the industry’s data output and professional standards.
For emerging leaders, Grende’s advice is to embrace every opportunity with total commitment. He believes that building a balanced foundation in credit, underwriting and new business development is what sets a professional apart from their peers. “Don’t only accept an opportunity, but put your all into it and embrace it, because this will set the foundation for all your future,” he explains. By combining this “all-in” mentality with a deep involvement in industry advocacy, Grende continues to shape the future of specialty finance while honoring the traditions that built it.
