Asset Based Lending Consultants
By: Erin Rafter

Donald F. Clarke is a globally recognized expert in Asset-Based Lending (ABL), with over 40 years of experience in field examinations, lending methodologies, and financial consulting. As president of Asset Based Lending Consultants (ABLC) since 1986, he has shaped ABL best practices, advised financial institutions on over $5 billion in transactions annually, and trained more than 5,000 professionals worldwide.

Clarke saw a gap in standardized ABL training, motivating him to create structured programs that raise industry standards. “ABL is often misunderstood, yet it plays a critical role in flexible financing. My goal has always been to simplify complexities and improve efficiency,” he says. His thought leadership includes publications like The Anatomy of a Fraud, and he was honored with the SFNet Lifetime Achievement Award and Hall of Fame induction in 2021.

Believing innovation grows through curiosity and collaboration, Clarke launched the ABLI training platform to standardize ABL education globally. He promotes mentorship and dialogue to keep best practices aligned with evolving demands. He sees ABL expanding into small businesses, supported by initiatives like the SBA 7(a) Working Capital Program. His ongoing involvement with SFNet and RMA keeps him close to industry shifts.

Before the COVID-19 pandemic, ABLC had already developed secure data rooms, standardized checklists and a remote examiner network to modernize field exams. When the pandemic disrupted normal operations, ABLC’s virtual systems allowed seamless adaptation and continuity. The proactive approach not only maintained service quality but expanded ABLC’s capabilities under pressure.

Clarke advises future innovators to have a clear vision, stay adaptable and listen openly. “Some of the best insights come from unexpected sources,” he says. He supports calculated risks that address real problems and are backed by data. “Change works best when it’s practical, sustainable, and aimed at long-term impact.”
