Mark S. Indelicato has spent nearly 40 years shaping the bankruptcy and restructuring landscape — though his career began by chance. “My resume was supposed to go to judges in the Southern District for a clerkship, but it ended up with the bankruptcy judges. That turned into offers from several judges, and that’s how it all started.”

Indelicato has represented all sides in bankruptcy matters, focusing on secured lenders and creditor committees. He’s played key roles in high-profile cases, notably during the 2007 subprime crisis. “We had to unwind a maze of loans. It was about preserving credit market integrity and recovering value for stakeholders,” he says. “Working with other lawyers and committee members, we created structures that helped navigate uncharted legal and financial terrain.”

His leadership was tested during the COVID-19 pandemic. “We got through it without a single layoff. You lead by example.” That mindset reflects advice from his father: never ask someone to do what you wouldn’t do yourself.

He credits his early clerkship for shaping his approach. “It taught me to respect the court, respect adversaries and that your reputation is key to your credibility. Being practical and fair — yet ready to litigate — is key to achieving consensus.”

As Global Chair of the Turnaround Management Association in 2012 and NYIC Chair from 2023 to 2025, Indelicato helped build educational and networking opportunities in the finance sector. Mentorship has been central to his career. “Some of my greatest joy comes from grabbing a drink with a former colleague and hearing their success stories.”

He’s also proud of supporting Legal Outreach in New York. “Giving underserved students a glimpse into what it’s like to work in the law can change lives.”

“I have trained many lawyers who have gone on to surpass me in the world of specialty finance. I consider training the next generation of lawyers to be of paramount importance.”
