Mike Knuckles has spent over four decades building a strong reputation in asset-based lending (ABL). After earning a finance degree from the University of Kentucky, Knuckles began his career at General Electric Company in its Financial Management Program and then later at GE Capital. He progressed through all the traditional roles including field exam, underwriting, portfolio management, business development, and ABL Department Head. He has worked at institutions including Barnett Bank, Wells Fargo Foothill, SunTrust Bank, Renasant Bank and now most recently, CB&S Bank, where he launched a new ABL division late last year.
Throughout his career, Knuckles faced challenges such as bank M&A and inconsistent support for ABL platforms. His success has come from taking calculated risks and staying open to new opportunities when others might have remained passive. He credits lessons learned from both effective and ineffective managers for shaping his leadership style — one that emphasizes respect, patience and empathy. Knuckles leads by example, fostering a culture where people are given space to grow at their own pace.
A standout aspect of Knuckles’s career is his long-standing commitment to mentoring and developing young talent. Over the years, he has trained numerous professionals who have gone on to build impressive careers in the field. A recent personal highlight was welcoming his son to the business while extending his professional legacy within the ABL space.
Despite the realities that come with a long career, Knuckles remains energized and deeply engaged. He continues to attend industry events, share hard-earned knowledge and make himself available to those eager to learn. His passion for helping businesses grow while nurturing emerging professionals keeps him motivated.
Knuckles’s legacy rests on his longevity, adaptability and values. He urges future professionals to understand credit fundamentals, embrace smart career risk-taking and never stop networking or managing their own professional growth.
