Bank OZK
By Violet Synnestvedt

With nearly five decades in asset-based lending, Mike Sheff stands out for his depth of experience, strategic innovation and lasting impact. From launching national ABL platforms to mentoring the next generation, his influence is both broad and enduring.

Sheff began his career in 1976 after earning an MBA from Columbia University. He started in commercial banking in New York before moving to Texas in 1981 and shifting into ABL. By the late 1980s, he was leading regional origination and execution teams across the Southwest and Western U.S. In 2011, he expanded BBVA’s ABL platform and most recently launched Bank OZK’s ABL initiative.

Throughout his career, Sheff has led organizations through both growth and consolidation — introducing billions in capital and reshaping market dynamics across the country. His leadership style — marked by integrity, accountability and adaptability — has guided teams through complex transitions and shifting market cycles. A dedicated mentor, he has prioritized developing talent by offering hands-on experience, broad exposure and a focus on continuous learning and professional growth.

Sheff also helped drive structural shifts in ABL. Early on, he played a key role in integrating institutional capital into traditional ABL structures, particularly in taking-private transactions. His foresight expanded definitions of “eligible assets,” helping ABL stay relevant amid evolving financial strategies and capital needs.

But perhaps Sheff’s greatest legacy is the people he’s empowered. Many of those he mentored now hold senior roles, carrying forward his values and approach to leadership. His belief in building not just platforms but people has left a deep, lasting mark on the industry.

In a sector that constantly changes, Sheff hasn’t just kept up — he’s helped define what’s next. His work continues to shape how capital is deployed, how teams are built and how the future of ABL is envisioned.
