CJ Wei is a recognized leader in private lending and asset-based specialty finance, deploying billions of dollars in specialty finance investments globally during his career. As a managing director at Northleaf Capital Partners, he oversees specialty finance investments focusing on origination, underwriting, structuring, and portfolio monitoring.
Wei has proven experience developing innovative capital solutions in niche sectors with low market correlation, including music royalties, commercial legal assets, healthcare receivables and factoring. Before joining Northleaf in 2019, he worked at several firms dedicated to asset-based lending, including Jefferies and Man Group. “Specialty finance fuses my interests in investing, innovation, creativity and helping management teams achieve their strategic goals,” he says.
A recent standout achievement was structuring financing for FundThrough, a leading factoring platform that provides small businesses access to working capital. The transaction has helped thousands of small businesses, driving job creation and generating a positive impact across communities in North America. He has also led $500M+ in financing tied to music royalties, supporting a wide variety of artists, including global icons like Ed Sheeran and The Who.
Wei is known for mentoring junior professionals and fostering collaborative teams. “I view my leadership responsibilities as an obligation in to support diversity, driving positive change to the ecosystems and individuals that I service, including the next generation of professionals in the specialty finance industry.”
Wei sees specialty finance as a fast-evolving, data-intensive sector that rewards curiosity, listening and resourcefulness. “The specialty finance arena is a tight-knit community, and maintaining a reputation of integrity and objectivity are important factors that I’d like to persist on in driving positive developments in the industry.”
Looking ahead, Wei expects greater institutionalization in specialty finance, and he remains focused on pioneering innovation and helping platforms scale with purpose.
