Global professional services firm Alvarez & Marsal (A&M) has expanded its restructuring practice with the addition of Michael Stewart who joins as a managing director in Toronto. Stewart brings nearly 20 years of experience in providing restructuring advice to corporations and their stakeholders across a broad spectrum of industries.

Prior to joining A&M, Stewart spent six years as a managing director at Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce (CIBC) Capital Markets in Toronto where he was the head of Restructuring and six years in the restructuring group at Jefferies as a senior vice president in New York, where he gained significant U.S. and Canadian transaction experience advising debtors and creditors in all aspects of corporate restructurings, ranging from CBCA debt recapitalizations and exchange offers to CCAA and Chapter 11 restructurings.

Stewart began his career with KPMG’s restructuring group where he became a licensed insolvency trustee and worked on numerous mandates, including a court-appointment as a CCAA monitor or receiver.

“Michael’s unique restructuring and capital markets background, having worked extensively in the U.S. and Canada as both a licensed insolvency practitioner and an investment banker, serves to continue to strengthen our leadership resources in Canada and with cross-border cases” said Doug McIntosh, managing director with Alvarez & Marsal Canada and leader of A&M’s practice in Canada.
