BankUnited hired Ernie Diaz as senior executive vice president, consumer and commercial/small business executive to lead the bank’s consumer, small business and commercial banking teams, effective Wednesday, May 29, 2024.

Cornish, chief operating officer of BankUnited, and to whom Diaz will report, said. “As a leading regional commercial and small business bank, BankUnited continues to invest significantly in talent to meet the evolving needs of our clients and we are thrilled to welcome Ernie to the senior leadership team.”
In his new role, Diaz will oversee the sales and branch strategy for the bank’s consumer, small business and commercial banking division that spans Florida, Texas and New York.
Diaz joins BankUnited from TD Bank in Miami, where he spent the last 16 years, most recently as executive vice president. In this role, he was responsible for leading TD’s consumer distribution network and largest employee population across the bank’s Maine-to-Florida footprint, including more than 1,100 branches, contact centers and the bank’s extensive ATM network, online and mobile channels performance. Prior to this role, he served as regional president in Florida, where he was responsible for providing strategic direction and sales leadership to retail, small business, commercial and specialty banking operations and lending services throughout a network of more than 155 branches.
A Miami resident, Diaz serves on the Baptist Health Services board of trustees and on the board of the Orange Bowl Committee. He is a past chair of The Beacon Council, Miami-Dade County’s economic development partnership and of the Florida International University School of Business Dean’s Council. He has served on the boards of the Camillus House and Latin Builder’s Association. Diaz earned a master’s degree in accounting from Nova Southeastern University, Davie, Florida and a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Florida International University, Miami. He is a licensed CPA in the state of Florida.
Diaz will be based at BankUnited’s headquarters, 7835 Northwest 148th Street, Miami Lakes.
