Alvarez & Marsal Tax, (A&M Tax), an affiliate of global professional services firm Alvarez & Marsal (A&M), hired UK-based Steve Henshaw, Anthony Watling and Tom Lobb, alongside U.S.-based Jerry N. Smith and Tim Trifilo, as managing directors. These new hires represent the continuous growth efforts of the practice, following on its recent expansion into Switzerland with the hire of Dr. Kersten Honold, as the Swiss Tax practice leader, and into Australia, led by Sean Keegan.

Collectively, Henshaw, Watling, Lobb, Smith and Trifilo bring a century of global experience across multiple geographies, industries, tax practices and procedures. Their combined focus furthers A&M’s mission to provide clients, ranging from high net-worth individuals, family offices, institutional investors, private equity and hedge funds to mid-market and global enterprises, with the broadest portfolio of tax services.

“The joining of Steve, Anthony, Tom, Jerry and Tim strategically augments our talent bench with comprehensive tax advisory expertise to help clients in the UK, the U.S. and around the world maximize value,” Ernesto “Ernie” Perez, global practice leader of A&M Tax, said. “We expanded our world-wide talent base by 40% in 2023 and anticipate an additional 30% increase in 2024. This group of tax advisers is a representation of our ability to attract some of the leading tax professionals on a global scale. I am thrilled to welcome them and look forward to seeing the impact they would deliver to our practice and our clients.”

Henshaw’s, Watling’s, Lobb’s, Smith’s and Trifilo’s collective tax advisory experience spans the indirect tax aspects of mergers and acquisitions, personal tax affairs of high-net-worth clients and tax implications of cross-border transactions. They advise clients on intricate local and regional tax regulations, structuring transactions, negotiations with tax authorities and evolving tax laws, including international issues and real estate investment trust (REIT) structures.

Their specific expertise includes:

  • Henshaw: Advising privately-owned, private equity backed and large multinational companies on indirect tax matters, including transaction due diligence and structuring as well as negotiating with His Majesty’s Revenue and Customs on value-added tax.

“Our talent expansion bolsters our ability to provided tailored tax solutions that help clients capitalize on opportunities locally, regionally and internationally,” Marvin Rust, managing director and head of A&M Tax Europe, said. “A&M’s integrated platform, freedom from audit conflicts and global network of tax advisors, with in-depth local knowledge, will be critical for continuing to mitigate risk and create value.”
