Global professional services firm Alvarez & Marsal (A&M) appointed senior directors Timothy Byhre in Chicago and Garrett Sussman and Matthew Bohlin in New York to the valuation services practice (VS).
The arrivals of Byhre, Sussman and Bohlin demonstrates the next phase of A&M’s strategy to expand the firm’s valuations capabilities and offerings. In recent months, and aligned with its growth plans, VS has also hired managing director David Juneau in Houston and senior director Caroline Walters in Dallas.
“Garrett, Matt and Timothy’s joining expands our capabilities, industry focuses and presence across regional markets,” Mark McMahon, managing director and global practice leader of A&M’s valuation services, said. “Timothy and Garrett’s alternative assets and complex securities expertise will help our clients add value as they navigate financial reporting complexities, particularly fair value measurement under ASC 820 and tax reporting.”
Byhre will focus on the valuation of debt and equity securities for ASC 820 reporting and tax reporting purposes. He brings more than 14 years of experience working with hedge funds, private equity and business development companies, as well as privately held companies in retail, financial services, healthcare and automotive industries.
Additionally, Byhre provides valuation advisory services regarding various types of debt securities, including senior, mezzanine, subordinated and convertible, as well as for various equity classes, such as preferred and common equity, and derivatives, structured products and other complex securities. Prior to joining A&M, Byhre served as RSM U.S.’s senior director of business valuation with a focus on portfolio valuation and fair market value for tax valuations.
Sussman brings 18 years of experience in financial and valuation services. Prior to joining A&M, he served as a senior manager with BDO’s valuation and capital markets analysis practice, overseeing valuations for portfolio clients and leading the review of valuations to complete annual audits for large and midsized funds. Sussman works with a wide range of clients including software, biotechnology and business and consumer services companies. At A&M, he will advise clients on alternative asset investment valuation and fund portfolio valuation for investor and financial reporting (ASC 820) and tax reporting purposes.
Bohlin specializes in providing valuation and real estate consulting services for strategic decision-making purposes, as well as valuations for financial and tax reporting purposes. With more than 20 years of real estate analytical experience, Bohlin has valued properties around the world related to financial reporting (ASC 805) and tax reporting, including valuations for estate planning, Foreign Investment in Real Property Tax Act (FIRPTA) and ad valorem purposes.
Bohlin’s property expertise includes hospitality and gaming, data storage, healthcare and assisted living and energy industries, as well as office, retail, industrial manufacturing, logistics and storage and multi-family properties. Most recently, he served as vice president with Houlihan Lokey’s dispute resolution consulting practice, specializing in real estate consulting and valuation services in the context of dispute resolution and litigation support.
“The maturation of our practice augments our ability to help clients maximize value against the backdrop of looming economic headwinds,” Kimberly Russell, managing director with A&M’s valuation services, said. “Matt’s real estate consulting and valuation services experience, in combination with A&M’s operational heritage, furthers our ability to solve clients’ complex problems and help them evaluate and strategize business decisions heading into the new year and beyond.”
