The American Bankruptcy Institute reported total commercial Chapter 11 filings increased 22% from 1,280 in Q1/17 to 1,562 during the first three months of 2018.
The American Bankruptcy Institute reported that there were 425 total commercial Chapter 11 filings in February 2018, representing an increase of 4% from February 2017’s total of 407.
Although a parade of Chapter 11 filings by major retailers grabbed the headlines in 2017, Samuel Gerdano and Ed Flynn of the American Bankruptcy Institute point out that, overall, large company filings were down compared to the previous two years. They predict 2018 will offer more of the same.
The American Bankruptcy Institute reported December Chapter 11 filings were 699, up 107% from the previous year. Calendar year 2017 Chapter 11 filings were 5,744, a 6% increase from 5,447 filings in 2016.

Commercial Chapter 11 filings totaled 426 in August 2017, a 29% increase over July’s total of 331 filings, according to data provided by Epiq Systems, which has partnered with the American Bankruptcy Institute.
According to the American Bankruptcy Institute, commercial Chapter 11 filings registered a 44% decrease in July with 325 filing, down from June’s total of 582. Commercial Chapter 11 filings were down 9% from last year’s 358 filings.
According to the ABI and Epiq Systems, total commercial Chapter 11 bankruptcies for the month of June 2017 increased 16% but commercial Chapter 11 filings have dropped 7% in 2017 overall.
According to the ABI, total commercial Chapter 11 bankruptcies for the month of June 2017 were 581, representing a 16% increase from the 502 commercial filings in June 2016.
