Wells Fargo named William M. Daley vice chairman of Public Affairs. Daley will serve on the Operating Committee and report directly to CEO Charles Scharf.

“I am delighted to welcome Bill to Wells Fargo,” said Scharf. “I have known Bill and worked with him for many years and know we will benefit from his unique background. My experience with Bill is that he does not think like a banker. He is a strong voice who brings perspectives from the public sector that we in business do not generally have but are critical for us as we make decisions. The addition of Bill and this role to our Operating Committee is an important statement that we want different perspectives on our senior-most management committee and that we will think more broadly about our stakeholders as we move forward.”

Daley has extensive experience in both the public sector and business. His career includes two cabinet-level appointments — chief of staff to President Barack Obama and secretary of commerce in the Clinton administration. He also served as vice chairman of BNY Mellon and a member of the bank’s executive committee, as vice chairman and a member of the executive committee at JPMorgan Chase, and as president of SBC Communications (now AT&T).

Daley will manage a team of more than 780 people globally and will have responsibility for Corporate Communications; Government Relations & Public Policy; Sustainability & Corporate Responsibility; and Corporate Philanthropy and Community Relations.
