The Wall Street Journal reported that credit union assets have grown at almost twice the pace of banks over the past 10 years.

The Journal added that the credit unions are are using their newfound financial heft to compete aggressively with commercial banks for business.

According to the Journal, because credit unions are not as highly regulated as banks, they are making riskier loans.
