Alvarez & Marsal appointed John McLean III a managing director in the firm’s healthcare industry group. McLean, who will be based in Atlanta, has two decades of experience transforming health systems.

McLean has spent the bulk of his 20-year career designing and executing multi-year transformational roadmaps in partnership with C-suite leaders for integrated health systems across the United States. He has led large-scale operational improvements, strategic repositioning initiatives and financial turnarounds. His clients include non-profit integrated health systems, standalone community-based organizations, regional healthcare alliances and academic medical centers.

He has collaborated with health systems to support strategic and financial goals across multi-disciplinary workstreams, including physician enterprise optimization, care transformation and continuum redesign, value-based capability adoption, cost structure improvement and workforce optimization, marketing and outreach, revenue enhancement, strategic growth, and digital health transformation.

“John’s ability to identify emerging healthcare market pressures and trends, leverage business intelligence and advanced analytics, and develop new health system revenue streams will further enable us to create value for clients,” Peter Urbanowicz, co-head of Alvarez & Marsal’s healthcare industry group, said. “During this particularly challenging time for healthcare organizations, John’s in-depth experience and foresight augments our ability to help solve our clients’ complex problems.”

“John has been a leader in the healthcare industry and has helped transform his clients operationally, financially and clinically to drive change,” Martin McGahan, co-head of Alvarez & Marsal’s healthcare industry group, said. “His ability to earn the C-suite’s trust is core to our leadership, action, results approach and aligns with our operational heritage and commitment to exceptional client service.”

McLean’s notable engagements include:

  • Implementation for a mid-tier health system in California that brought $25 million in savings and revenue enhancement across cost structure improvement, clinical practice improvement, revenue cycle, physician alignment, as well as capacity management and patient flow
  • Cost transformation efforts for a large West Coast integrated delivery network that brought $40 million in expense reduction and positioned $60 million in clinical affordability opportunities across resource utilization, length of stay and readmissions
  • A financial turnaround for a health system in New Orleans that resulted in $25 million in expense reduction and revenue enhancement and reset future strategy

Before joining Alvarez & Marsal, McLean served as practice leader of the margin improvement service line within Premier’s Performance Partners consulting practice.
