Global professional services firm Alvarez & Marsal appointed Steve Spiegelhalter managing director and North America investigations practice leader in its disputes and investigations group.
Spiegelhalter is an investigator, prosecutor and compliance expert, and will advance A&M’s complex problem-solving capabilities in response to increasing market demand for regulatory advisory services.
Spiegelhalter specializes in investigating alleged political corruption, money laundering, bank and wire fraud, false claims and other criminal alleged activity. He will counsel clients on their compliance programs, including companies under regulatory investigation, external monitorships and self-reporting requirements. During his 20-year career, Spiegelhalter has investigated business conduct in more than 50 countries and worked across a range of industries, including technology, life sciences and medical device manufacturing, defense contracting, financial services, insurance, aviation natural resources and others.
Before joining A&M, Spiegelhalter was a partner with Ernst & Young, where he most recently served as practice leader of forensic and integrity services for Washington, D.C., and Northern Virginia. Spiegelhalter appeared before the Department of Justice and the Securities and Exchange Commission and has led forensic investigations into numerous matters under investigation by the DOJ, the SEC and foreign governments.
Spiegelhalter also served for seven years at the United States Department of Justice, the bulk of it as a federal prosecutor in its criminal division, fraud section, Foreign Corrupt Practices Act unit. While there, he prosecuted FCPA violations as well as securities, bank, mail, and wire fraud; money laundering; and other federal crimes. Spiegelhalter also trained foreign prosecutors and law enforcement on techniques to best advance corporate and individual corruption investigations.
“In the face of a shifting regulatory environment and rapidly increasing compliance costs, companies need effective and efficient advisory services that meet current requirements and anticipate future ones. Steve’s hiring augments our capabilities and expands our ability to maximize value for clients,” Jerry Dent, North America practice leader of Alvarez & Marsal disputes and investigations, said. “Steve’s extensive experience aligns with A&M’s leadership, action, results approach and advances the solutions we bring to clients.”
