Multi-lingual (Japanese/English) Senior Credit/Risk Officer

Large independent multi-national is looking for a multi-lingual (English and Japanese) risk/credit leader to work closely with the Head of Credit in the structuring and approval of commercial loans/leases. Duties will include the preparation, translation and review of credit packages, deal structures, credit analysis and will include delegated approval authority from the parent company.

Significant experience in US, Canadian and Japanese markets and proficiency in both English and Japanese is required.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Review, approve, decline or recommend to appropriate higher authority, credit applications for new originations, renewals or modification of existing loansReviews and analyzes loans within individual credit authority to ensure that accepted underwriting standards are met
  • Responsible for the quality of loans including loan delinquencies, maturities, and monitoring of criticized/classified loans in conjunction with the Chief Credit Officer
  • Educates and enforces loan policies and procedures to mitigate risk and ensure alignment between with parent company.
  • Advise sales and credit teams on underwriting and loan structure matters and facilitates transaction discussions with parent company credit team
  • Continuously monitors loans, to ensure annual reviews are well documented and risk ratings are accurate, identify deteriorating credits and take appropriate action to mitigate risk and communicate performance and concerns to top management.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • 15+ years in commercial lending experience
  • Previous Credit experience in Middle Market Lending including various products such as Asset Based Lending, Trade Finance and Equipment Lending and Leasing
  • Liaison experience between Japan and US preferred
  • Strong financial, analytical and underwriting skills
  • Previous experience in the Japanese and American Lending Markets
  • Understanding of the documentation and legal requirements including the US Bankruptcy Code, Uniformed Commercial Code or other US Lending and Compliance regulations
  • Ability to keep abreast of economic trends and developments including environmental, legal, governmental and technological concerns
  • Proven communication and collaboration skills and the ability to work across boundaries and functions at executive levels
  • Experience managing team members
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Finance or related field (MBA/CPA preferred)
