The Turnaround Management Association (TMA) has announced Deloitte corporate restructuring practitioner Sheila A. Smith and U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Robert D. Martin will receive the 2012 TMA Chairman’s Award, to be presented November 2 at The Annual, TMA’s 24th annual conference at the Westin Copley Place Boston in Boston.

Smith, a principal with Deloitte Financial Advisory Services and the national service line co-leader for its corporate restructuring group, and Martin, a U.S. Bankruptcy Judge for the Western District of Wisconsin in Madison, are being honored for their outstanding leadership by fostering the growth and stature of TMA and the corporate restructuring industry, as well as having distinguished themselves as prominent professionals in their specific areas of practice.

“I am privileged to have the opportunity to recognize these outstanding professionals for their many years of service to TMA and the industry,” says TMA chairman Mark S. Indelicato, a partner with Hahn & Hessen, New York. “Sheila and Judge Martin have demonstrated a commitment to their fields that has left a lasting impact on the association and their colleagues.”

Based in Boston, Smith previously led Deloitte’s Financial Advisory Services practice in New England overseeing corporate finance, forensic and dispute services, valuation, economic consulting, and business intelligence services. In addition to more than 20 years of experience in the areas of turnaround, bankruptcy and restructuring advisory for diverse parties-in-interest, including debtors, secured creditors and unsecured creditor committees, Smith has been an integral part of TMA since 1995 when she joined the TMA Northeast Chapter Board of Directors. She subsequently served in a number of TMA Global leadership positions, including her current role as 2012 Annual Conference co-chair.

Judge Martin has served as Chief U.S. Bankruptcy Judge for the Western District of Wisconsin (Madison) since 1978. He also has served extensively by designation to the bankruptcy courts in the Northern Districts of Illinois and Iowa. A former president of the National Conference of Bankruptcy Judges, charter fellow of the American College of Bankruptcy, and conferee in the National Bankruptcy Conference, Martin also has more than ten years of service on the TMA Global Executive Board and on numerous committees. He has played a significant role in the TMA Certified Turnaround Professional program as both an author and teacher.

Smith (2005) and Martin (2009) are both past recipients of TMA’s Most Outstanding Individual Contribution Award.
