Shearman & Sterling strengthened its financial restructuring & insolvency practice with the addition of Joel Moss, who joins the firm as a partner in the New York office.

Moss comes to Shearman & Sterling from Mayer Brown, where he was a partner. Prior to that, he was in-house counsel at Barclays, where he handled bankruptcy and restructuring matters for the bank in the U.S. for a variety of internal clients, negotiating and reviewing restructuring documentation and documentation for DIP and exit financings, as well as structuring financial transactions to mitigate bankruptcy risk. Moss assisted the prime services group and other transactional areas of the bank on netting and other bankruptcy issues relating to futures, derivatives and commodities. He also was the lead lawyer in preparing the Barclays U.S. resolution plan (“living will”) required under the Dodd-Frank Act.

His current practice focuses on advising banks, trading desks and distressed investment funds on a wide variety of bankruptcy and restructuring related matters, as well as advising banks on resolution planning, and he has considerable experience in advising on DIP financing, exit financing and workouts. Moss also works regularly with distressed investment funds, advising on restructuring matters.

Moss is a contributor to leading legal and restructuring journals and a regular speaker at industry conferences. He has been named a Rising Star in IFLR1000 and a named attorney for bankruptcy by Legal 500.

“Joel comes to Shearman & Sterling with a solid track record as both a private-practice lawyer and as in-house counsel at Barclays,” said Creighton Condon, the firm’s senior partner. “Having been on the client side, he knows what it means to put clients first and is highly regarded by his clients.”

We see him working very closely with our existing Financial Restructuring & Insolvency clients and in introducing the firm to a number of his existing clients.”

“Shearman & Sterling’s marketplace excellence in leveraged finance, high yield and regulatory matters perfectly complements my practice,” Mr. Moss said. I look forward to working closely with my new partners to assist my existing clients as well as the firm’s deep client base on matters relating to restructuring and bankruptcy.”
