King & Spalding recruited banking and finance lawyer Michael L. Urschel as counsel in its financial institutions practice. Urschel will divide his time between the firm’s New York and Atlanta offices. Prior to joining King & Spalding, Urschel practiced law in New York for seven years, principally with Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison.

“We are delighted to welcome Michael to the firm,” said Richard T. Marooney, co-leader of King & Spalding’s financial institutions practice. “His addition to the financial institutions team further extends our capabilities in the banking and finance arena.”

Urschel has represented financial institutions, sponsors, borrowers, issuers, underwriters and arrangers in leveraged finance, capital markets and securitization transactions, with a focus on private equity acquisition finance, special situations lending, sports finance, distressed and illiquid assets, and the securitization of specialty assets, including whole business securitizations. He was named a New York Metro Super Lawyers “Rising Star” in banking in 2014.

“The opportunity to bridge my New York-based finance practice with a leading international firm with a historical presence in my hometown of Atlanta is incredibly exciting, and I am glad to be part of King & Spalding’s platform,” said Urschel.

Urschel earned his J.D. degreefrom the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he was an articles editor of the North Carolina Law Review.
